There is a difference between health advice lines and triage lines. Health advice lines are usually a community-based information service that offers answers to general healthcare questions such as:
-advice line for people who need confidential advice on sexual health
-HIV support and information
-mental Health telephone helpline
-advice to young pregnant women and teenage parents
-a listening service offering emotional support
-advice about legal, social and health aspects of drug use
Health advice lines offered by municipalities or insurance companies.
Triage services are typically offered by healthcare facilities. In many health care settings now, telephone services are providing innovative approaches to delivering services and providing advice. They take calls from patients who are attempting to contact the physician or other healthcare provider. Telephone triage aims to advise patients regarding appropriate treatments for their current symptoms and decrease the number of unnecessary office and emergency room visits. Based on the assessment, Telephone Triage Nurses provide information, education, advice on self-care, or can help you decide whether to make an appointment with your doctor, go to a clinic, contact a community service or go to a hospital emergency room.
