With the tremendous shortage of nurses, more men are encouraged to join the profession. There are many organizations and health agencies that are working to promote the nursing as a profession for men, but the most popular organization is American Assembly for Men (AAMN) .
Men come to nursing for much the same reasons as their female counterparts, primarily to help others and for the growth opportunities the profession offers. Today, about 6% of the nursing workforce in the U.S. is made up of men. However, in the military at least 35% of the nursing force in each of the three branches is composed of men.
The purpose of American Assembly for Men in Nursing is to provide a platform for the discussions, plan makings and meetings about the factors that influence the participation of men in nursing. The American Assembly for Men in Nursing is working to attract the men to come and join this profession. AAMN is a national organization with local chapters; it ncourages men of all ages to become nurses and support men nurses to grow professionally. AAMN membership is unrestricted by consideration of age, color, creed, handicap, sexual orientation, lifestyle, nationality, race, religion, or gender.
