Clear communication in the medical field is essential. LVNs must be able to speak clearly and comprehend English in person and on the telephone.
When patients can’t understand what the nurse is telling them, then she really isn’t providing a good service. So, if English is not your native language, or you want to strengthen your English skills, you can take English courses before you apply to the LVN program. Nursing students need adequate English verbal, reading, and writing skills to successfully complete this program.
LVN students are taught how to calculate medication dosages, which includes arithmetic, decimals, fractions, percents, and converting between units of measurement. If you feel you need practice in this type of math, you can take a math course before you apply to the LVN program.
English and math courses are optional; you do not have to take them before applying to the LVN program. You should consider taking these courses only if you feel you need preparation before applying.
