The OB Tech provides support to the RN and the Physician in the care of obstetric patients, assisting with deliveries and scrubbing for cesarean sections. They also assist with maintaining supplies and function as a unit secretary.

OB Tech Education: Successful completion of a surgical technician program that provides preparation for assisting with c-section procedures.

The OB Tech functions as a member of the Women and Newborn Health Services Department and performs selected activities under the direction and supervision of the RN:

-assists in the admission process; collects data which includes the patient’s vital signs and portions of the admission record

-identifies changes in patient’s condition; schedules tests, therapies and procedures

-performs procedures; assists physicians or other professionals with procedures

-maintains a sterile field

-performs personal cares and comforts

-takes baby photos

– transports and transfers patients

-performs equipment set-up, maintenance, operation and cleaning per established guidelines

-cleans the equipment and operating room

-may be required to perform some clerk duties These activities will be under the supervision/direction of the RN and may include turning charts, processing orders, sending messages to admitting, transcribing orders, ensuring charts are in order, etc.
