Pharmaceutical Scientists Career

The pharmaceutical sciences are a group of interdisciplinary areas of study involved with the design, action, delivery, disposition, and use of drugs. The pharmaceutical sciences are further subdivided into several specific specialties:

-Pharmacology: the study of the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on human beings. Pharmacology researches how substances interact with living organisms to produce a change in function. It integrates knowledge of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, physiology and chemistry to study the relationship between biological processes and therapeutic agents.

-Pharmacodynamics, sometimes described as what a drug does to the body, involves receptor binding (including receptor sensitivity), postreceptor effects, and chemical interactions.

-Pharmacokinetics is currently defined as the study of the time course of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.
Clinical pharmacokinetics is the application of pharmacokinetic principles to the safe and effective therapeutic management of drugs in an individual patient.

-Pharmaceutical toxicology: the study of the harmful or toxic effects of drugs.

-Pharmacogenomics uses information about a person’s genetic makeup, or genome, to choose the drugs and drug doses that are likely to work best for that particular person. This new field combines the science of how drugs work, called pharmacology, with the science of the human genome, called genomics.

-Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the study of the molecular and mechanistic aspects of pharmaceuticals. The discipline emphasizes the chemistry of drug design and development, drug action, drug transport, drug delivery, and targeting.

-Pharmaceutics: the study and design of drug formulation for optimum delivery, stability, pharmacokinetics, and patient acceptance. The science of preparing and dispensing drugs

-Pharmacognosy: the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources.

-Medicinal chemistry is the application of chemical research techniques to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.
