END technologists who specialize in evaluating sleep disorders are often called polysomnographic (PSG) technologists. PSGs perform and evaluate polysomnogram testing procedures
PSG tech functions independently to safely operate advanced medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology, recognize sleep pathology and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety. They use a polysomnogram (PSG) which includes monitors for heart rate; eye movements; chin muscle; nasal and oral airflow; chest, abdomen, and leg movements; blood oxygen levels; as well as brain activity.
Physicians use PSGs to identify dysfunction in sleep/wake cycles, to diagnose breathing disorders during sleep, and to evaluate treatment of these disorders. To record electrical potentials from the eyes Polysomnographic Technologists perform an electronystagmogram (ENG). Physicians use the ENG to objectively document involuntary rapid movements of the eyeballs. Often used for patients complaining of dizziness, the ENG can show the difference between inner ear and central nervous system involvement.
Polysomnographic (PSG) Technologists Duties:
-Gathers, analyzes, and compiles patient information in order to identify and meet patient specific needs
-Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study tracing to ensure signals
-Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events
-Contacts patients to ensure compliance and satisfaction with treatment
Polysomnographic Tech I/II:
Successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year duration, associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility
Polysomnographic Tech III: Successful completion of a polysomnography program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis on polysomnography. OR Successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year duration, associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician. Must be (and maintain) certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent.
