Certified Nursing Assistants are required to renew nursing assistant certification every 2 years by the last day of the CNA’s birth month. It is the responsibility of the CNA to keep her/his address current with the Board. Applicants must have worked, doing nursing assistant duties for a minimum of 150 hours within the past 2 years. The number of hours depends on the state you are certified in.
Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Recertification Process
If you have been a CNA in in the past and you wish to re-certify please follow these steps:
1.Search the registry to confirm if you are listed
2. If you name is listed on the registry there is no further action required on your part.
3. If your name is not listed on the registry then call the Department of Public Health to obtain information on what steps you need to take to become certified. Request a recertification packet. You can download the form on the relevant state board website and fill out your personal information.
CNA-Recertification: If you have not worked in the last 24 months, you can still renew a certification. Retake the state certification exam if you have not performed work at a health care facility within the past 24 months.
For those who have a nursing assistant certificate that has been expired for more than two consecutive years, the only way to become re-certified is to repeat the entire process of training followed by the competency examination. If you are in this situation and wish to work as a certified nursing assistant, then you need to attend a new CNA course and pass the CNA state exam.
CNA Recertification Requirements
-If your name changed, include a copy of an official document showing your previous name (i.e. birth certificate, social security card, diploma from school and a “copy” of an official document showing your new name (i.e. marriage license, divorce decree, driver’s license, social security card)
-It is important to have a valid US living permit or proof of citizenship. You can give a copy of your passport if you are a US citizen, or a permit copy if you have a working visa or a green card.
-The Board can revoke a Nursing Assistant Certification if the applicant for recertification has one or more felony convictions that have not previously been disclosed to the Board and the applicant has not received an absolute discharge from the sentences for all felony convictions five or more years prior to the date of filing an application for recertification.
